Dealing with Griefers Part 6:
Abuse Reports

The Lindens are not playground monitors. They will not come running to assist you because another avatar pushed you or called you a bad name or showed you a body part you would rather not have seen. They are, however, interested in the well being of the Second Life community and will take action against residents who violate Second Life's Community Standards and/or Terms of Service.

Before filing an Abuse Report please take a deep breath and make certain that the incident which you are witnessing is indeed deliberate abuse and not a misunderstanding. Also, please remember to Remain Calm and do not engage in any behaviours which could give the griefer reason to file an Abuse Report about you. (Linden Lab's customer service staff have access to the log information inside Second Life and can review what residents said or did at the time an Abuse Report was filed - including what you said or did!)

If you are convinced that filing an Abuse Report is appropriate, pull down your Help menu and select Report Abuse.... The Report Abuse window will open.

Report Abuse window

In order to enable Linden Lab staff to take appropriate action against the abuser, it is important to file a complete and accurate Abuse Report.
  1. In the top right corner of the Abuse Report you will see a snapshot of what your camera was seeing when you initiated the report. If this snapshot will help to clarify the incident about which you are reporting, select the "Include screenshot" box immediately beneath it.

  2. If the incident is related to an object, click on the blue object picker button to the left of the screen shot and then click on the offending object in-world. This will attach the object's location, name and owner information to your report.

  3. Select a category for your report from the drop-down list. Category options are:
    • Intolerance
    • Harassment
    • Assault
    • Disclosure
    • Indecency
    • Age
    • Parcel
    • Other

  4. Click the Select button next to the Abuser name field to open the Person Chooser and enter the name (or partial name) of the person causing abuse. Click Find, then highlight the correct name in the list which is returned and click Select.

  5. The next item Location of abuse is automatically filled in for you. (It is possible to change the information in this field -- if, for instance, you are sitting peacefully on your land with Create Objects, Object Entry and Run Scripts all turned off, watching a self-replicating object take over the neighbouring parcels -- but, for the most part, you will want to leave this field unchanged.

  6. Include a brief (max 64 characters) but informative summary of the incident in the Summary field.

  7. Include specific details concerning the incident in the Details field. A description of the nature of the abuse and any relevant chat/IM text should be included here.

  8. Click on Report Abuse to submit your report.

  9. If you have additional details which you could not fit into the in-world report, you can include them in a reply to the automated email which you will receive upon filing your report.
That's it. Your report has now gone off to Linden Lab's customer service team who will review it and deal with it as they are able.

Don't expect an immediate response to your Abuse Report (other than the automated email). Also, do not expect your report to result in the immediate expulsion of the offending individual. Linden Lab staff will review the report and decide upon appropriate action which may include an official warning, an account suspension, cancellation or ban.

Linden Lab takes into account the past record of the offending individual when deciding how to respond to an Abuse Report so, yes, if you encounter multiple incidents of a resident committing the same offense, you can file an abuse report for each one. Also, if multiple residents are witness to the same incident, you can all file reports. This will give Linden Lab staff a broader perspective on the incident and may help them to choose an appropriate course of action.
