Using Animations Part 4:
Pose Balls
Pose Ball is the generic name given to an object in Second Life which animates the avatar who is sitting on it.
Typically, a pose ball works by stopping the default sitting animation and starting a custom animation in its place. The custom animation needs to be placed in the object's inventory.
Pose balls can be built into furniture or vehicles or they can be stand alone objects. You will also often see them as obvious balls floating above an object (thus giving the potential sitter an obvious place to click).
Pose balls can be made from very simple scripts which simply animate one avatar in one pose, but they can also get much more complex -- providing the sitter with a menu of animation choices, and/or linked to additional pose balls which are used to animate other avatars in relation to the first. (Think "couples" animations.)
The Sit Here text in an object's pie menu can be replaced with different text to give the potential sitter some idea of the pose he or she is likely to find him/herself in upon sitting on the object. An object's Sit Target can also be adjusted to ensure that an avatar sitting on it is positioned correctly.
As with everything else in SL, you can purchase pose balls from fellow residents, pick up open source freebies from many locations in world and/or script your own.
